United States Embassy, Ankara, Turkey

This multi-building Embassy complex is located in the Karakusunlar neighborhood of Ankara. Inspired by Turkish architectural traditions, the landscape and architecture are organized around a series of interior and exterior courtyards, which progress from formal and representational to private and casual. Negotiating 25m of grade change across the site, the sequential experience of courtyards and gardens creates a layered integration of landscape and building. Together, they provide unique spaces designed to meet the diplomatic community’s varied needs, while creating a sense of unity across the complex.

The Embassy’s various exterior spaces are framed by bands of trees inspired by the central Anatolian Oak-Juniper-Black Pine forests. Each space is characterized by Travertine clad site walls and paving, combined with a diverse plant palette reflective of Turkish garden traditions.

Within the building, the public life of the Embassy centers on the Main Courtyard. The cafeteria and other community programs face the Courtyard, which brings natural light and open air to flexible spaces designed to host staff gatherings inside or out.
