Jennifer Guthrie and Shannon Nichol Visit the White House
On Monday, July 14th Jennifer Guthrie and Shannon Nichol attended a luncheon at the White House hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. The luncheon honored the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award Winners and Finalists. GGN was a 2008 Finalist in the Landscape category.
   
Kathryn Gustafson Awarded the ASLA Design Medal
The ASLA has announced that Kathryn Gustafson is the 2008 recipient of the ASLA Design Medal, one of the organization's highest honors. The Design Medal is awarded to "an individual landscape architect who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for a period of at least ten years."
   
  UW School of Medicine South Lake Union Completed
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol has recently completed Phase 2 of the University of Washington School of Medicine South Lake Union campus. GGN's design includes an elegantly designed promenade between buildings as well as public plaza spaces. Vulcan is organizing a media tour of the project on Tuesday, June 3rd.
   
GGN Invited to Participate in the Venice Biennale
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol and their partner office in London, Gustafson Porter have been invited to design a garden installation at the Venice Architecture Biennale. This is the first year in the Biennale's history that a significant landscape will be included among the exhibitions. This year's Biennale is being curated by Aaron Betsky. Shannon Nichol to Lecture at the Alberta Prairie Green Roof Conference
Shannon Nichol will be a keynote speaker at the Alberta Prairie Green Roof Conference in Calgary, AB on June 9-11. Cooper Hewitt Names GGN as Finalist for the 2008 National Design Awards
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol was named a Finalist for the Cooper-Hewitt's 2008 National Design Award. The Landscape Design Award is given to an individual or firm for exceptional and exemplary work in urban planning or park and garden design. For more information, please click here.
   
Shannon Nichol Bestowed With Honorary AIA Seattle Membership
Shannon Nichol will be made Honorary AIA at AIA Seattle's annual awards dinner on May 31st.
   
Lurie Garden wins ASLA Award of Excellence

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced today that Gustafson Guthrie Nichol’s design of the Lurie Garden has won an Award of Excellence, one of the highest honors bestowed by the organization.

The ASLA received over 500 entries for the 2008 Professional Awards. The Lurie Garden was selected from more than 200 entries in the General Design category, the largest of the six categories. Of the nine project winners in this category, the Lurie Garden is the only one to receive an Award of Excellence. The awards will be presented on October 6 at the ASLA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

GGN Wins Two WASLA Merit Awards
The Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects presented GGN with two Merit Awards for our designs of Seattle City Hall Plaza (with Swift & Company) and The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian Institution. The awards were presented at a ceremony on March 27th at the Burke Museum. This year's jurors for the awards were Laurie Olin, Marta Fry, Frederick Steiner, and Adam Arvidson.
   
Grand Opening of Fire Station 10 on May 17

The grand opening of Fire Station 10 took place on May 17, 2008. Fire Station 10 is Seattle's new Emergency Operations Center. GGN's landscape design includes many integrated security measures.

   
GGN Completes Work on Watermark Credit Union
GGN recently completed work on a custom planter and bench element for the new Watermark Credit Union Corporate Headquarters. GGN worked with prime consultant Interior Architects to develop a landscape element which complements the design of a new employee lounge area ("the EPIC center") within the historic Roffe Building, a downtown Seattle landmark.
   
Jennifer Guthrie Lectures at the University of Manitoba on March 18
Jennifer Guthrie visited the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg on March 18th and lectured on landscape architecture at a variety of scales - how smart urban design can reclaim land and rejoin cities at the macro level, while acting as a means of reuniting people at the micro level. Jennifer highlighted high profile public projects as well as projects from GGN's portfolio.
   
Kathryn Gustafson Receives Rainier Club Laureate Award

On March 6th, Kathryn Gustafson was honored as the Rainier Club's 9th Club Laureate at a festive dinner presented by the Rainier Club Arts and Literary Committees and The Rainier Club Board of Trustees. Kathryn joins the distinguished company of past Laureates Jonathan Raban, Dale Chihuly, Ernestine Anderson, David Horsey, August Wilson, Jane Eaglen, Tom Robbins, and Tom Skerritt.

Kathryn will be lecturing at the Rainier Club on May 1st.

   
Grand Opening of the Kogod Courtyard Sunday, November 18th

The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian's Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture opened to the public on Sunday, November 18, 2007. Gustafson Guthrie Nichol's landscape design creates a contemporary complement to the new glass canopy by Foster + Partners, while reflecting the character of this historic building.

North End Parks Officially Opened to the Public on November 5th

North End Parks in Boston was opened to the public at an official ceremony and ribbon cutting on Monday, November 5, 2007. The park was dedicated by Senator Ted Kennedy. North End Parks is one of three new parks built over Boston's Central Artery Tunnel, also known as the Big Dig, as part of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, named for Senator Kennedy's mother. GGN Announces New Hires and Promotions

Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd is pleased to announce that Bernie Alonzo and Shantell Hatfield have joined the firm. Bernie joins the firm as an Associate and will be working extensively on GGN's work on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Shantell joins GGN as an Administrative Assistant.

Additionally, Grant Stewart has been promoted to Principal.

   
Shannon Nichol on Mayor's Urban Design Awards Jury
Shannon Nichol recently served as a juror for the Calgary Mayor's Urban Design Awards. This is a biennial award that strives to recognize the contribution designers make toward improving Calgary's quality of life. The other jurors are filmmaker Gary Burns and architect Bing Thom.
   
Shannon Nichol Speaks at Forum Monterrey 2007

Shannon Nichol spoke on October 10th and 11th at the Forum Monterrey 2007 in Mexico. Shannon had the opportunity to meet with students as well as presenting at the Forum. Shannon lectured on "Quality of Life and the Urban Landscape: Site-Specific Passive Landscapes."

The Forum is an international event held every four years to promote thinking and problem solving on issues of global importance such as cultural diversity, sustainability, peace, education, and knowledge. Shannon participated in Week 3, the theme of which was Cities and Population. The main partner of the Forum is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

   
GGN Receives Award from the University of Washington
On Monday, May 14th, GGN was presented with a firm Honor Award from the University of Washington Department of Landscape Architecture. The award recognizes GGN's contributions to the landscape architecture field and to the department.
   
Les Jardins de L'Imaginaire Honored by French Minister of Culture
In March, the French Minister of Culture classified Les Jardins de L'Imaginaire, or Gardens of the Imagination, in Terrasson, France as part of France's National Heritage of the 20th century. This designation recognizes the Garden as being an icon of the 20th century for future generations.
   
Jennifer Guthrie and Shannon Nichol Featured in Documentary

Jennifer Guthrie and Shannon Nichol are currently featured in a short documentary on the landscape architecture profession, produced by the Futures Channel. The six-minute film discusses Gustafson Guthrie Nichol's work on the Lurie Garden in Chicago and will be distributed to schools to teach children about the landscape architecture profession and show them real-world applications of math and science.
